defining physical theatre

“At its best all theatre is physical- At its simplest physical theatre is theatre where the primary means of creation occurs through the body rather than through the mind” (D callery,2001). Physical theatre is a piece of theatre that involves movement. A physical theatre piece can be varied indeed the terms is virtually impossible to define. Physical theatre is used to describe any mode of performance that purses story telling or drama through primary and secondary physical and metal means.

Over the past few weeks my definition of physical theatre has changed Before working on my final piece I believed that physical theatre many involved lifts and dance, which is true however it involves much more than movement. For a production to be known as physical it doesn’t necessarily mean lots of movement. I agree with the statement above in that physical theatre covers a very wide range of movement and exercises. Throughout the weeks on learning about physical theatre it means more than just moving it’s a mental state and learning about the space and how your physicality changes in different parts of the space. The problem with physical theatre is that it is very hard to trace, due to the different origins and that very few practitioners themselves are comfortable with the definition.
